Stocks are getting hit hard today after an unexpected jump in the number of people applying for unemployment benefits. 429,000 people applied for unemployment benefits last week, much higher than what economists expected. This has sent the major indices in a free fall with the Dow down over 200 points, the Nasdaq down 30 points, and the S&P down 20 points. Stocks are up in early afternoon trading as there are signs of progress in the Greek debt crisis. France and Germany have reached an outline agreement to aid debt-ridden Greece. A gauge that measures the future of the U.S. economy was also stronger than expected causing stocks to see some gains today. While no big movers today in penny stocks, there are a few companies seeing decent gains.
Portage Resources (OTC:POTG) is up 25% today at $0.41 with a high of day at $0.4140. POTG has seen a lot of action since June 15 when the company released news of a new president and CEO. A bunch of sites also began promoting POTG as well and the stock has seen about a 300% gain since Wednesday. POTG has traded nearly 11 million shares so far today.
Nortel Networks Corp. (OTC:NRTLQ) is up nearly 26% after the company announced it was delaying the auction date for its patents by a week due to the amount of interest the company is seeing. NRTLQ is currently trading at $0.05 and has seen over 14 million shares in volume so far.
Shares of Newport Digital Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:NPDT) are up 26% at $0.0043 with an intraday high of $0.0055. NPDT has traded over 55 million shares so far today. It looks like it’s moving on a promo since no news has been released and no real movement at any point the past week or so.
Green Technology Solutions, Inc. (OTC:GTSO) is up 20% at $0.96 with an intraday high of $1.04. GTSO is trading slightly above average volume today with nearly 200 thousand shares traded. On June 15, the company announced that they have selected Korea Resources Corp. to analyze Mongolian Rare Earths Ore.
Overall the market is up this afternoon, but it is off its highs. The somewhat positive news out of Greece seems to be helping the markets some today. Penny stocks saw some decent movers today, but no homerun type movers.
